SLOK /// FEEL ALIVE /// CIRCLE MUSIC
I received a nice email durring my vacation home in the Midwest from an Italian DJ/producer who goes by the alias, Slok. After just a few minutes listening to the links he sent me I felt ashamed I hadn't heard his stuff earlier (and I told him that in my email response). Either way i'm sure glad he contacted me because now i'm pretty obsessed with his newest single, "Feel Alive" featuring the Canadian trio My Favorite Robot. The single came out on the 13th on German label Circle Music. The release features the original mix, a dub version and two remixes courtesy of Subb-an and Lopazz & Casio Casino. The original is a mix of warm and blissful vocals courtesy of My Favorite Robot combined with a soft saw wave like bass line that keeps the track deeply anchored on the floor. There is definitely a kind of psychedelic vibe happening in this track thanks to some interesting and well placed synth work. I would love to hear this during a daytime dj set in the forest or desert. Subb-an's remix is definitely one for when the sun goes down as it's got a bit more attitude. Much more room is given to the percussion in this mix and the bass line has definitely been soaked in a bit acid if you know what I mean. Also, the vocals have been blunted a bit and it seems there is a hint of gurgling distortion in them. Lopazz & Casio Casino round out the picture with a remix that fittingly enough with the theme of this post would be a great sunrise tune. A bit more life has been brought back to the vocals and there are moments where the phrases fade away slowly with a long decaying echo. Definitely the most ethereal mix in the bunch. About 4:15 a subtle bass line pops up and makes for a pleasant little surprise. Then the whole things finishes with some nice acidic bass licks and warm chords. Slok's dub mix is just what it sounds like so if you're not in the mood for the lyrics (though I don't know how you could be) this is the version for you, or it can make a nice dj tool. This release is phat and I'm really looking forward to what Slok will be dropping on us in the future. Keep those emails coming man!
